Scones are an absolute favorite at our house, and these Orange Chocolate Chip Scones are no exception. They include another one of my favorite flavor combinations: orange and chocolate. This time in a scone. I was only recently introduced to the numminess that is scones. I mean, I had eaten store bought scones, but those don’t really count. Homemade scones are SO much better. If you find a good recipe, they can be moist and flavorful and the perfect addition to a weekend breakfast or brunch.
The thing that really has made me keep looking for good scone recipes is that everyone in my little family likes them. That, by itself, makes them worth making. A LOT And these scones have great orange flavor, with the chocolate chips spread evenly through them. They’re both pretty and tasty.
Ingredients
- 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- zest of 2 oranges
- 12 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup cold heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 2/3 cup mini chocolate chips, or regular chips roughly chopped
- for glaze: 2 tablespoons orange juice and 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Heat oven to 400. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone liner.
- Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and orange zest in a mixer with a paddle attachment.
- Cut the cold butter into small chunks and slowly add to the dry ingredients with the mixer on low. Mix until the butter is distributed and is pea-sized. Add chocolate chips to the dry ingredients.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, cream, and orange juice.
- Turn the mixer on low and slowly add the cream mixture. Turn off the machine once added.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Add more flour to the top of the dough and pat it down to flatten into a circle about 8-9 inches in diameter. Cut into pieces like a pie.
- Separate the pieces and put them on the prepared pan. Bake 15-17 minutes.
- For the glaze: whisk together the orange juice and the powdered sugar until smooth. Drizzle over scones after they have cooled for a few minutes.

Hi Pat! I’m sorry I can’t! But there are several converters out there. Here’s one I found by a quick search on google – http://www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/531168/cups-to-grams-converter I hope that helps!

These look delicious! It doesn’t say when to add the chocolate chips so I’m assuming that they go with the dry ingredients…?
Jodie
Sue, SO sorry about that! I’ve added the instructions for adding the chocolate chips (kind of important;).
