Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

We eat pizza a lot at our house. Usually once a week. It’s the one food that I really never get tired of. But we can’t afford (in our wallets or our waistlines) the delivery stuff as often as we eat it. We’ve found that we much prefer the homemade stuff anyway. I’ve already shared with you one of our favorites, the Fajita Pizza. That recipe I actually have made too often apparently. Because I was informed by my husband that we needed to take a break for awhile. I was okay with that, because that is the beauty of pizza and there are so many options! I’m sure you will see some more of our favorites over the years because we keep coming up with new ones.

This whole wheat pizza crust is currently our favorite for all our many pizza combinations. It’s soft and chewy on the inside, but is crisp on the outside. We sometimes like it thicker, and sometimes thinner and it works well baked on both a pizza stone or on a cookie sheet. What kind of masterpiece of a pizza can you come up with?

Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes

Yield: 1 thick crust or 2 thin crust

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 Tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let stand for about 10 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Stir in the olive oil and salt into the yeast mixture, then mix in the whole wheat flour and 1 cup of the all-purpose flour until dough starts to come together.
  3. Tip dough out onto a surface floured with the remaining flour and knead until all of the flour has been incorporated, and the ball of dough becomes smooth, about 10 minutes.
  4. Place dough in a bowl that has been sprayed with non-stick spray and lightly spray dough as well. Cover loosely with a towel and allow to rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. When the dough is doubled, you can divide into 2 for 2 thin crust or leave as is for a thick crust and place on a pizza pan, stone, or cookie sheet that has been greased with cooking spray and roll out the dough to the desired thickness and shape.
  6. Top with your favorite sauce, toppings, cheese, etc. - be creative!
  7. Bake in at 375 for about 15-18 minutes, depending on thickness and amount of toppings. The crust should start to appear golden and the cheese should be melted.

Looks like a great recipe. We’ve tested several from Allrecipes and haven’t found a favorite yet. We’ve been looking for a good pizza crust so we’ll definitely be giving this a try.
